And since it is a short film not a full length film they have to pack a lot in in a smaller span of time.Lawgiver wrote:Agreed.Saint of Sinners wrote:I think the crowded scenes are artistically licensed. They are trying to portray the enormity of the battle. This isn't some little skirmish we're looking at. Think D-Day at Normandy. If they were realistically spread out the scene would lose its intensity.

Well I say it could be worse. But I won't be happy if the movie looks like this. This looks like it could have been a TV show. The Mechs looked pretty good in some shots, but less so in others.
What I really hope is that they get some really fine actors to do the movie. Sure, what the film looks like is very important, but it'll be the quality of the story and the characters that I'll be watching for, and will really make or break this movie for me.

IMHO I don't think we should expect the greatest acting, or the greatest CG of this movie. It's not a hollywood film funded by someone with deep pockets, though as I said in my first post mabie someone with a vision will see this film and realise that there is great potential in a full length feature film with a large budget...

Well that's why we can onl hope that we get a big-budget film. Now its not that I think low-budget films are crappy, but this particular kind of film needs to be big-budget to work.
Peter Jackson got lucky with the LOTR and got the chance to make a real film that everyone loved, not just fans. Maybe the same will happen to this film.

Then we're just going to have to agree to disagree on this. It looks utterly retarded. So retarded that I won't bother watching the final version. Why would I? It completely ruins the suspension of belief.Lawgiver wrote:Agreed.Saint of Sinners wrote:I think the crowded scenes are artistically licensed. They are trying to portray the enormity of the battle. No offense, but you must not be able to watch many films after seeing the previews if you can't suspend reality then.Justicar wrote:Then we're just going to have to agree to disagree on this. I'll say one thing for the mechs appearence, they may look a bit plastic, but the scenes where there are actors interacting with vehicles and mechs, the didn't try to beef up the look of their actuall sets to look more realistic.
If anything that should show the degree of consistency they are using in making this film.
I've seen films, where the CGI vehicles look nothing like the actuall prop vehicles they use in real shots.

It is.
If they want us to buy the fact that the mechs look plastic, then I think it's good film making if they make all shots of mechs and vehicles look that way.
If the CGI is inconsistent with the real shot props, it makes us feel even more that its a movie. and destroys the illusion of the film.
perfect examples of this would be all those B-horror movies from the 70s and early 80s. it looks fake.
However in this movie trailer, they show people actually interacting with real shot props, and CGI. The Kerensky woman in the MadCat is especially flawless in the way she moves with the CGI cockpit.
The same goes for the green APC that thos e2 men walk out of. it doesn't look real, but they make a definate effort to try to get you to think that this is every day looking thing for these people. Not only in the way they act, but in the way it is filmed.
All I'm saying, is even though it doesn't look all that real, the makers of this film get an A+ for effort. My hopes are pretty high for the finished product.

Lawgiver does have a point as far as reality is concerned.
Like I said earlier, even though it is a movie with mechs, and well quite frankly a science fiction movie.
If an audience is going to buy the concept of a basically unrealistic concept like the battlemech, then they have to make all other aspects as realistic as possible. if you keep reminding the audience that this isn't real, then it makes it hard to focus on the things that matter when telling a story.
I'm gonna watch the finished product, and I probably will enjoy it too, but I would like to be immpressed rather than merely entertained. but that's just me.

Joe, I understand what you are saying and if this was a Steven Spielberg or other noted Hollywood bigwig I would say you are bang on but this is a student production with a limited budget so they have to make do with what they can afford. Although, I must say I find this a whole lot better than the effects in "Sky Captain" and some other well known movies.joepsycho wrote:Lawgiver does have a point as far as reality is concerned.

I am impressed that they have done as much as they have for a school project. Would I like something more realistic? You bet, but I like what they have done so far despite the obvious shortcomings.
