Where one starts all depends on where one is going?
Back to the beginning? Then eBay is your friend.
Jump into the now, then CGL and your FLGS shop?
I'd recommend the current boxed set for the maps and up to date current basic rules.
Books, as I said, pick a period.

Thats kinda where I want to stick, because its what I remember. Early era then the clans invaded.Dread wrote:I believe Catalyst Game Labs makes the new books, but you can usually find them on E-bay or Amazon, too.
If you've been out for 20 years, you have a lot of catching up to do. Even over the last 5 years things have spun out of my grasp and I tend to stick with 3025 or Clan Invasion era.
Thanks.

Greetings, Carmachu.
Welcome to the site. You'll find subject matter on all things Battletech here.
... as well as a few that aren't.
Most people play whatever era they feel most comfortable with.
'cause the only time that "Era Specific" matters is in tournament play.
and I've been playing for 25 years, and have only played in ONE tournament; and it was using 3025 tech.

I meant technical books. How many are there and what years nowadays? 3025? 3039? 3050? and beyond?

You really need to go here:
http://bg.battletech.com/
Look at the orange coloured bar with lots of drop down menus on it.

Yes and no.
3039 is an updated compilation of 3025 and 3026 with all the copyright infringement illustrations removed, and those mechs put in their own section under Project Phoenix.
3050 and 3055 are updated, which means changes and again for the 3055 book the removal of images that FASA didn't own.
3057 contents folded into other books as parts of upgrades.
3060 a straight reprint, but probably has errata amendments?
3075 is all new stuff and a good TRO along with 3085, but the organisation of contents is different to the early FASA products.

Re: INTRODUCTION THREAD
Guess I should reintroduce myself since I'm not sure there's anyone left here who recognized me. It's been probably 4 years since I've posted and I almost forgot about this little corner of the interwebs.

Re: INTRODUCTION THREAD
Hello everyone!
I have dabbled in Battletech before (mainly the Introductory Box Set, I bought several - most of the 'mechs have either been sold off or given away as presents) but when I discovered Paint it Pink's blog, Panther 6 Actual, I got hooked by the 'mechs again.
So now I'm thinking about diving back in by getting together some St Ives Compact forces to fight my friends' Capellan Death Commandos.
And I thought why not join a forum, particularly one that had such a good write-up by Panther Six Actual? So here I am.
Regards,
PMC
