Pen & Marker Sketches

Post by Akalabeth Angel »

Had the idea of trying to do a sketch a week for each Battletech game session we played, thus combining the sketch-a-day artist challenge (though weekly) and the idea of a battle report in one. Here's the first (perhaps the only):

Image

While assaulting a world in Marik space, Lando's Lancers were tasked with coming to the aid of a Cladius Steiner who had been trapped between two enemy forces. The lancers deployed in an amphibious assault against a small city where the enemy had been lying in wait for Cladius. During the engagement, an enemy Banshee charged forward towards the second landing craft and its two deployed DI Morgan assault tanks. Massed PPC fire tried to down the charging assault but many of the shots hit the water. The Banshee was able to inflict a terrible toll before allied units could down the unit and eventually carry the day.

Well my plan to do sketches every week fell completely flat. To be honest I was getting a little bored with doing drawings of that quality. So after a long hiatus, I have finally taken some of my artwork to the next step.

Rather than take something from Battletech, I decided to take a Mech design of my own from pen&marker sketch to a finished digital painting. After many hours of work and with some great digital painting advice from my wife I was able to bring it to a state I was satisfied with.

Enjoy

With this finished I'll take a bit of a break from digital painting and switch gears, but for my next piece I plan to do some more fan artwork featuring the PC mechs from our battletech campaign. Hopefully I can show that in a month or two.

And don't worry. I had a plan for a weekly thing myself and it fell flat on its face too.

Thanks!

Yeah and I think people should only plan a weekly thing, once they've already delivered on a couple of weeks. Form the habit and then call it a thing rather than the other way around. Though as I said to be honest I wasn't a fan of the previous quality that would be required for a weekly sketch either, so dropping any pretenses and just putting in a lot more time per piece so I can learn new things seems like a better way to go. Because honestly if I'm not learning new things, I'm probably bored.

Hey! Looking GREAT and Welcome Back!

the Mech looks Swift, Deadly and dangerous. :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

I have no complaints about weekly schedules or the lack thereof.

I originally promised DAILY updates on Ronin's Ramblings.

Daily ramblings? Yeah that would take 30 minutes to an hour each day. Lot of work.

I've never given any sort of battletech stats for my design, but I figure if it were a battlemech it'd probably be a medium-heavy striker with a pair of Large VSPL and some smaller guns underneath. 4 Lasers, MGs or maybe some Streak-2 racks. The one thing I'm not a big fan of in the design is that the waist is quite narrow. Something quite common in a lot of my original sketches and something I'll need to look out for.

Yeah when I say sketch it's probably about an hour's work. I did a rough drawing, then traced a bit cleaner over top (but still very rough) and added the background then coloured it. What distinguishes it from say my Banshee drawing is that I tried very hard to make the lines of that drawing fairly clean so the clean up took more time:

http://koalabrownie.deviantart.com/art/ ... -511464245

AND what distinguishes it from say the digital painting above of the "Minerva" is about 10 hours of work haha.

A sketch like this is actually fairly easy to do and people seem to enjoy them so I might try to bang out a couple and release one a week as I'd planned before. It didn't work before mind you, but last time I tried was with the Banshee drawing above and when I take the time to clean it up, it adds about another 3-4 hours of work to the process. So if I keep the lines rough & sketchy overall I can probably get them done more easily.

Thanks for the comments.

New Sketch, "Convoy Duty".
Supposed to be a GRF-1S Griffin but I put the LRM-5 on the wrong torso. Close enough.

Still looks awesome no matter what.

Can't wait to see an Atlas and/or Banshee.

My two favorite 'Mechs.

I did do a banshee a fair while ago, though I'll try to do another in the coming weeks. I've thought that if I can do one such sketch a week I'll try to incorporate all the units from 3025. I've got the next four or so roughed out and no atlas or banshee but maybe sometime after.

I'll try to release a sketch every week as stated earlier. The one for next week is almost finished, just need to do up the background. It features an iconic assault mech in a very un-iconic configuration.

I have also thought up some decent compositions featuring the Atlas and Banshee. Will try to rough them out and feature them soon.

Yeah if you haven't seen it, check out the DA gallery:

I have a few older ones that don't show up here. Mostly featuring some newer or clan machines plus a couple original designs and the ever beautiful Yeoman

Not unless we're talking about Yeoman Rand ;)

Yeah I showed the gallery to a longtime friend of mine recently and he enjoyed everything overall but said "Dude, why the Yeoman??". I just drew it to try and make the ugliest mech in battletech look better. Think I succeeded, quality aside, but it's still not a pretty sight.
